Umrah with Kids and Elderly Parents: A Family Planning Guide

How to plan a family Umrah that works for toddlers, teenagers and grandparents, from choosing hotels to wheelchairs and meeting points.

Umrah with Kids and Elderly Parents: A Family Planning Guide

Taking your parents for Umrah, or your children for the first time, is one of the most meaningful trips a family can make. It also takes more planning than going alone. These are the things that make the biggest difference.

Choose the hotel by distance, not by stars

With elderly parents or young children, every extra minute of walking adds up across five prayers a day. A 4 or 5 star hotel close to the Haram usually pays for itself in energy. In Madinah, most hotels in the central area are a short walk away, so you can save money there and spend more in Makkah.

Wheelchairs and mobility help

  • Request wheelchair assistance with your airline when booking, for both directions.
  • Wheelchairs are available in Masjid al-Haram, and you can push your own family member during Tawaf on the designated levels.
  • Electric carts can be hired for Tawaf and Sa'i on the upper levels.
  • Bring a lightweight folding wheelchair if your parent uses one at home. Airlines usually carry it free.

Keeping children safe in the crowds

  • Put a wristband or card on each child with your name, hotel and phone number.
  • Agree on a fixed meeting point, such as a numbered gate, every time you enter the mosque.
  • Dress children in a bright colour so you can spot them easily.
  • Use a lightweight stroller for toddlers. Strollers are allowed in most areas outside the busiest times.

Plan a gentle pace

Do not try to pray every prayer in the main mosque from day one. Rest after the flight, perform Umrah when everyone is fresh, and build in a quiet afternoon at the hotel each day. Children remember the feeling of the trip more than the number of prayers.

Health

Older travellers should see their doctor before travel and carry a short written summary of conditions and medicines. Pack extra medicine in case of delays, and keep everyone drinking water, especially in warm months.

Prepare children before you go

Show them pictures of the Kaaba and Masjid an-Nabawi, tell the story of Hajar running between Safa and Marwah, and let them practise saying the Talbiyah. Children who know what to expect are calmer and more involved.

Our family Umrah packages include child pricing and hotels chosen for shorter walks.

Quick answers

Do children need to perform Umrah?

Umrah is not obligatory for children, but they can perform it and it is rewarded. Parents usually help younger children with each step.

Can I push a wheelchair during Tawaf?

Yes. There are designated areas and levels for wheelchair users in Masjid al-Haram.

What age is best for a child's first Umrah?

Many families find that children from about six years old remember and enjoy the trip most.
